World Class Baseball and Slough would not be the two things that people would put together, yet they should.
The Farnham Park National Baseball and Softball Complex a few minutes from Central Slough is the only purpose-built multi-field baseball and softball facility in the UK. It opened in 2013 and was specifically designed to provide a national home for the sport.
The GB Women’s Baseball team recently held the first-ever World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC)-sanctioned invitational tournament and free baseball camp at the Complex. The tournament featured the GB Women’s adult team, development team, and the Czech Women’s adult national team.
Despite challenging weather, players trained hard, for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers. The team’s sheer determination could be felt in the drill sessions, as each player honed their pitching.

The event, combined with the free open camp, was a way for GB players to connect directly with anyone interested in taking up baseball.
While baseball doesn’t have as large a following in the UK as it does in the US, it still has a significant presence across the country, with 55 clubs affiliated with the British Baseball Foundation.
What makes that achievement even more remarkable is that many of these players are balancing elite sport with work, university and school.
Speaking with two young players, Billie and Megan, who are part of the extended roster, they said they work to balance school and baseball.
“It’s just a trial and error with what works. I did my GCSEs last year, and I was just trying to find the time, just on the way down here. I was here almost every weekend, I was just doing work in the car.” – Megan

Megan, who was part of the Little League team, joined the women’s team after seeing a post on social media about the team’s win at last year’s European championships.
While Billie, who grew up playing in Australia, was keen to reconnect with the sport after moving back to the UK 4 years ago.
Though having different journeys into baseball, the two girls encouraged anyone interested to take up the sport.
“It’s a great opportunity and fun sport to get into, you get to know lots of great people.” – Billie.
A common misconception that keeps people from getting into sports is that it’s easier to start playing at a young age to develop their skills. But seasoned team members, Laura and Stella, emphasised that this is not the case.
“Through a colleague, I just found an opportunity to try adult baseball for beginners. So, I tried it, got really into it, and now I’ve done it for years, and it’s been amazing.” – Stella
What residents might not know is that Farnham Park is the official training ground for the GB teams and home to the Little League Youth baseball club, making it ideal for anyone looking to explore baseball.
“I think from an international series perspective, it’s really exciting to be able to showcase Farnham Park playing fields in Slough and have representatives from Czechia, the US and the GB women’s national team here” – Laura

As the tournament was an officially sanctioned event, it was a unique opportunity for the team to contribute to the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Rankings, while showcasing the sport to residents.
The players’ commitment to raising awareness and sharing their love for the sport was clearly displayed throughout the weekend.
Perhaps the most surprising fact is that the GB Women’s Team receives no official funding. These athletes represent their country while often paying their own way through fundraising and crowdfunding efforts.
That makes their success even more impressive.
As the team prepares for the World Cup Qualifiers in Taiwan, they hope young girls watching from the sidelines will see what is possible.
“You have the community and all the practice, then I think it’s all worth it. And it’s also quite nice for us to be an inspiration or motivation for the younger girls in the UK, and hopefully they will be able to get funding for it in the future” – Stella
