The Slough Explorer

Antarctica Comes to Slough!

Slough witnessed something truly extraordinary, befitting the current climate of promoting environmental awareness – the Amazing Antarctica exhibition!

A public, free and immersive event that transformed the high street from an average shopping experience to a memorable occurrence of discovery and creativity. The frozen wonders of the southernmost continent became an experience that allowed residents and visitors of all ages to witness the power of science, art and storytelling. All in a single week!

The organiser of this fantastic project, Viva Slough, intended for it to be a “way for everyone to experience a unique insight into Antarctica.” And they certainly hit the nail on the head! Throughout the entire week, spirits remained high with an abundance of people checking out the exhibition numerous times. From the moment the doors opened, the space buzzed with excitement and wide-eyed awe. With over 300 people attending, families, children, students and curious adults poured into the venue, eager to step into a different world.

But the Antarctica exhibition wasn’t intended for people to merely view and watch.

In addition to all the thoughtful hands-on activities and games, was the full-body experience combining arts and science. In partnership with Salt Hill VR, the exhibition featured an immersive virtual reality experience that transported enthused visitors to the icy landscapes of Antarctica. With headsets on, people meandered through glacial planes, coming face-to-face with penguins, seals, and the stunning natural beauty of the world’s most remote place.

Not to mention how informative the exhibit was with quirky animal facts being taught in an engaging manner whilst uncovering the grand history of the continent. Funded by the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust and the British Science Association, there was a clear environmentally conscious effort, highlighting the necessity to understand how the Antarctic plays a vital role in our climate system. We hope this becomes a learning curve for our many young scientists or simply a general means to revitalise interest in the world!

However, what made this event truly stand out was its passion and dedication to inclusivity.

And if you missed it, don’t worry, events like this are just the beginning and deserve to be experienced by everyone.

But keep an eye out – the next adventure could be right around the corner!
