When I first told my friends, twenty years ago, that my family might be moving to Slough, the reactions were hesitant at best. “Are you sure?” they asked. “Slough isn’t the place you think it is.” That was my first impression, shaped by outdated stereotypes rather than lived experience.
But the moment I arrived; Slough began to rewrite its own story for me.
A Tapestry of Cultures, Woven Together
Slough is one of the most ethnically diverse towns in the UK, a place where more than 100+ languages echo through our streets and where the younger generation brings energy, innovation, and hope. Its proximity to Heathrow has made it a global gateway, and migration has enriched the town with traditions, cuisines, and creativity from every corner of the world.
Here, diversity is not a statistic but a lived experience. It is the warmth of neighbours sharing festival sweets. It is the sound of Bollywood music blending with British pop music at community events. It is the sight of multifaith centres standing proudly side by side, including one of the oldest temples in the region.
A Town Alive with Creativity
Slough’s creative heartbeat is unmistakable. From the Curve – our iconic library, to the vibrant murals on the buildings, and the spoken-word gatherings in our parks, the town pulses with artistic expression.
Young people lead the way through Digital Arts, VR workshops and Film projects inspired by both Bollywood and British cinema.
Their creativity is not just impressive, it is transformative.
Community: The Soul of Slough
What truly sets Slough apart is its people.
Initiatives like Together as One, and countless volunteer groups form the backbone of our community. Every volunteer is welcomed, trained, and empowered by Slough CVS (Council for Voluntary Services), and I am proud to be one of them.
I have seen young people teaching older generations digital skills with patience and joy. I have seen volunteers from different faiths working side by side during crises. I have seen kindness and compassion become everyday acts.
This is the Slough I know. This is the Slough the world deserves to see.
A Place to Work, Create, and Thrive
The Slough Trading Estate, the largest in Europe, is a powerhouse of opportunity. Home to national and international companies, it offers space for businesses to grow and for people to build meaningful careers. It is a symbol of Slough’s ambition and resilience.
Celebrations That Bring Us Together
Slough’s cultural calendar is a feast of colour and joy with events such as the Slough Mela, a celebration of music, dance, and unity. With heritage walks through local parks and exhibitions at Slough Museum, showcasing Sloughs rich history. Even through spotlighting local artists through the annual ‘Slough’s Got Talent’ at The Curve.
These events remind us that culture is not something we invent, it is something we live.
Why Slough Deserves Town of Culture 2028
Slough does not need reinvention. It needs recognition.
We aim to remove the stigma that has lingered unfairly for too long and replace it with the truth: Slough is a town where people live together in harmony, where creativity thrives, where young and old build the future hand in hand.
I am proud to call Slough my home. Proud of its diversity. Proud of its resilience. Proud of its heart.
And I believe with every fibre of my being that Slough is ready to shine as the Town of Culture 2028.
